Each member of The Channel Cats — Mike Langford (lead vocals), Steve McCracken (saxophone), Marlowe Bork (trumpet), Greg Ward (drums), Pete Woolidge (piano), Richard Conrad (rhythm guitar) and Ken Deschamps (bass) — is an accomplished in own right. However, according to Buell, when they come together as one, something special invariably happens.
“Every once in awhile you come across someone who gets it right and these guys are cracker jacks,” he enthuses, noting McCracken, as the band’s music director, writes arrangements which not only are unique but very nicely showcase each member’s talents as part of the whole.
For Buell/Kelly Productions — the other half of that equation is Jeremy Kelly — the concert represents an opportunity to give back to McCracken, the owner of B Flat Music in Peterborough, who wrote and produced one of the songs for the fledgling video and film company’s documentary River Dumoine: A Paddler’s Journey. It was screened locally last month.
“It’s such a hassle securing rights for music,” notes Buell.
“But the pool of talent here locally is so incredible. We turned to Steve and he did a terrific job. This concert is a way of reciprocating that.”
The concert will be videotaped by Buell/Kelly as the duo strives to perfect that aspect of its services in the hope it will “have some future commercial benefit for us.
“We want to be known as a world-class documentary production company.”
