The Day After The Sabbath V compilation

Download from:  [mf] or [mg]
pass:  tdats

Part 5 of my compilation series, selected tracks from some of my favourite 70s heavy obscure bands. Charlee starts the show with their excellent riffing, Nahuatl from Mexico offer up some latin sabbathism and Writing on the Wall throw in a mind fuck of a bad trip which is incredibly heavy for 1969. Asterix were the original incarnation of Lucifer's Friend!

01 - Charlee - Wheel Of Fortune Turning - 1972
02 - Stone Garden - Oceans Inside Of Me - 1969
03 - Ainigma - Prejudice - 1973
04 - Asterix - Gone From My Life - 1971
05 - Randy California - Downer - 1972
06 - Tiger B. Smith - Tiger Rock - 1972
07 - Náhuatl - Evolucion - 1974
08 - Parish Hall - My Eyes Are Getting Heavy - 1970
09 - Crystals - Time Out - 1974
10 - Stray - Taken All The Good Things - 1970
11 - Mammut - Mammut Ecstasy - 1971
12 - Glory - Cantaloupe Moon - 1970
13 - Jeronimo - Silence Of The Night - 1971
14 - Orang-Utan - Chocolate Piano - 1971
15 - Orange Wedge - No One Left But Me - 1974

Night Sun - 1972 - Mournin'

[Download] 96MB, 320k/s

In 2023, psychedelicbabymag.com published an interview with Walter Kirchgässner (guitarist) and Bruno Schaab (vocals, bass) (link).

This is it. Along with Captain Beyond, the best obscurity I have found so far. It has everything a self-respecting proto-metal geek could possibly want; they recorded one album in 1972, they are German, with some elements of krautrock, and they reach levels of heaviosity that are simply mind-blowing for their time. To me they sound like an amalgamation of Sabbath and Deep Purple with just enough prog and kraut to give them a unique aspect over those bands. In places this album show's a total affinity to Sabbath's DOOM, but it also has fast bits (proto-thrash?) and one genuinely beautiful and touching ballad called Come Down, only one balled, all that's needed, just as it should be.

It also has insane aggression in spades, now here is where I think it out-metal's Sabbath, it has a genuine nastiness that is almost totally lacking in other music of it's time and it builds up to intensities which rival progressive death metal. A lot of these obscure albums I find have decent heavy bits, but all too often they don't last long enough within a song, which will often give way to cheesy boogie woogie or 60s pop or blues etc for the chorus......well there's NONE of that anywhere on this album, which is a sweet relief and really makes it sound years ahead of it's time.

When you listen to the first track 'Plastic Shotgun' you may not think it sounds much like Sabbath, and this one doesn't, but it's fast, heavy and unusual. The vocals are everywhere, Bruno Schaab is tremendously versatile, he can sing, scream, and shriek perfectly at each point in a song as required. Just wait until Got A Bone Of My Own comes along, float through it's ominous slow-burning into........and Bang, along comes a gargantuan riff that will have you checking the liner notes for sneaky guest appearances from Iommi and Lord. During my first ever listen, it was at this point that I realised how special this album is and I hope you will too.

The Day After The Sabbath compilation Vol 1

Part I of my compilation series, this is a great collection of the bands that got me interested in all these obscurities in the first place, so it is one of the best comps on the blog. You can't go wrong with any of these tracks, all heavy and all riff-tastic. If this is your intro to the blog you will not be disappointed!

Cheers, Rich.
